HUMMINGBIRD
Cover and interior for a novel by Devin Krukoff.
Felix, a struggling novelist with a history of mental illness, is repeatedly ripped from one place and time to awaken suddenly in another. Each of these jarring transitions is accompanied by a strange humming sound or vibration. Jumping through space and time forces our protagonist to alternately revisit his traumatic past and experience a disturbing future. Reality is elusive for both Felix and the reader in this suspenseful, disturbing novel.
The “humming” in the title was created by repeatedly ripping through each successive page in a stack of pages—each printed with the title set in a different typeface. Each rip was slightly offset in order to reveal the type on the page below. Printing on uncoated cover stock reinforced the “worn, dinginess” of the visual texture on the cover.
